MONDAY (10/25)

   The procedure of the Model United Nations, which the Pine Crest IRC has participated in over many years, will be explained.  The structure of a Model United Nations simulation will be discussed, as well as the rules of order, which will govern debate and resolution-writing at the PC Model Congress of Vienna.  Students will receive their country assignments for the simulation.

FRIDAY (11/5) & MONDAY (11/8)

   Student-delegates will discuss with each other the main issues their country must address, and establish a hierarchy of their country’s needs according to the issues presented.  They will research and collect information for the purpose of writing a position paper.  This paper will consist of a complete paragraph on each of the issues presented for consideration by the Congress, and will represent the student-delegate’s best interpretation of their position, which the assigned country would have taken in the same historical circumstance.

    Students must also include a resolution for each of the issues presented to follow each position paper (three issues for this simulation).  Every country must have a specific resolution outlining the country’s goals and desires.

TUESDAY - THURSDAY (11/9-11/11)

   All student-delegates will report to class.  All position papers with proposed resolutions are due (have two copies; one for the instructor, and one for your group).  The Congress of Vienna will be called to order by the “Secretary-General.”  Debate will begin on the resolution of the historical issues previously stated.  All debate will be governed by Robert’s Rules of Order.  Delegates are expected to be polite, considerate, and remember that the goal of this meeting is to resolve disputes, which threaten world peace, and to have FUN!

    The delegation will go through a practice round of how the topics are chosen under a Model United Nations format, however for this exercise the first topic will cover the “Balance of Power” and re-drawing the map of Europe.

    In the ensuing periods, debate will continue from where the delegation had left off previously.
