1. Read the overview of human origins and answer the following questions.

a.

What new conclusions have scientists drawn about our relationship to the apes? What is the evidence for these conclusions?

b.

Read about hominids. What is a hominid? Be sure to provide examples.

2. Look at the human evolution timeline.

a.

Why do you think some hominids are classified as mostly apelike, some as mostly humanlike, and others both apelike and humanlike?

b.

Go to The Story of Lucy and read the first 4 paragraphs. Why is Lucy, or Australopithecus afarensis, considered a hominid?

3.  Go to the Human Evolution Activity

Create a table of the different Hominid Species.  Record the time in which they existed and distinguishing characteristics (move your mouse over the face of the different hominids to see a description).

 

 

 

4.  Based upon all of the information you have seen, what is the difference between Australopithicus and Homo genera?
