Instruction for Writing an Abstract of a Scientific Article

 

 

For the remainder of the year, you will be writing abstracts of scientific articles.  Answer the questions using complete sentences and in paragraph form.  Do not number your answers.  Answer the questions asked.  In preparing the answer the questions, you should use the following format:

 

                                                                                                                       

 

Title of Article

 

Source and date of article.

Author’s name

 

  1. The title of the article, source, and date of the article.  Include the author.  (2 points)

            (See example above.  Please use this format. Do not repeat in body of abstract.)

 

  1. Type a one to two page summary (depends upon the length of the original article) describing the main ideas developed in the article.  This is to also include the following:  What questions is (are) the author(s) trying to answer in the article?  (Total worth 5 points)

 

3.      What instruments or scientific equipment did the investigator(s) use to answer his/her questions?  (This includes organisms, chemicals, etc.)    (3 points)

 

4.      List FIVE course related facts that are mentioned in the article.  Number each fact and especially list facts that you now understand as a result of reading the article, reading your text, or from the lecture.  Tell how they are course related. (5 points)

                                                                                                                                                     

5.      How do the illustrations contribute to the understanding of the article?  Be specific.  For at least one of the illustrations, tell what you learned and how the information was communicated.  (2 points)

 

6.      What questions arose in the course of the study?  What is the future outlook in this area of study?  What other questions occurred to you or what questions do you now (or still) have?    (3 points)
